The Day After: Vermont 76, Boston University 75

By John Barone

For extended stretches of Tuesday's game, the Boston University men’s basketball team showed exactly why the coaches of the America East Conference tabbed it as the preseason favorite to win the league.

Then, with victory just seconds away from BU’s grasp, the University of Vermont pulled the rug out from under its rival’s seemingly special night.

Senior forward Marqus Blakely capped a 21-point, 12-rebound performance by assisting on the go-ahead basket with 9.4 seconds remaining, and the Catamounts eked out a 76-75 win over the Terriers before a crowd of 968 at Agganis Arena.

The America East Conference’s leading scorer at 19.2 points per game versus the league’s two-time reigning Player of the Year.

The head-to-head matchup between John Holland and Marqus Blakely down the stretch in the Boston University men’s basketball team’s pivotal contest against the University of Vermont Tuesday night had the feel of a heavyweight bout.

Recap: Strong scores 24 to pace Terriers' win over Albany

By René Reyes

On most nights, senior guard Corey Lowe, junior forward John Holland and sophomore forward Jake O’Brien fill up the stat sheet for the Boston University men’s basketball team.

Saturday night was an exception.

Senior co-captain Carlos Strong stole the spotlight, scoring a season-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting to lead BU to a dominating 68-53 win over the University at Albany at SEFCU Arena.

Sidebar: Terriers down DiLiegro, lights out from the charity stripe at Agganis

By Matt Whitrock

University of New Hampshire junior center Dane DiLiegro had a monster game when BU traveled to Durham for the Terriers' first meeting with the Wildcats on Jan. 7. The 6-foot-9 post player notched a double-double, putting up 20 points and 16 rebounds. Although the Terriers managed to escape with a hard-fought 60-56 victory, UNH held a lead with less than six minutes to play largely due to DiLiegro's superlative performance.

Contrast January's game with the Terriers' 69-47 victory last night, and the difference is obvious. New Hampshire's formidable interior presence was held scoreless. Without functional offense from the low block, the Wildcat offense was forced to rely on contested jumpers and ill-advised drives into the heart of a swarming BU defense.

Sidebar: Tyler Morris shines in first full game back

By René Reyes
Two days before the Boston University’s men basketball team’s Jan. 8 matchup with the University of New Hampshire, fifth-year senior Tyler Morris dove for a loose ball in practice and hurt his shooting hand.
The injury – a stress fracture in his right hand – sidelined Morris for BU’s next eight games.
In his return to action last Saturday – a 71-55 BU loss to Stony Brook University – the third-year co-captain logged 23 minutes and recorded four assists, three steals and two rebounds before fouling out of the contest.
“First of all, I’d just like to say that [BU] coach [Patrick Chambers] and the people around me this year have really helped me through this last injury,” Morris said. “Coach has really made a conscious effort to keep me a part of the team during these three weeks that I’ve been out. I think it’s most important to thank them.
“In times when I might need help or I might be down about something, my teammates and our coaching staff pick me up – that’s first and foremost. Secondly, coaches have reiterated to me that [coming back from injuries] build your character. They make you a better person in the long run.”
