Around the League: 11.21.08

Friday night's games

Maryland-Baltimore County 76, Quinnipiac 71

The Retrievers (2-1, 0-0 America East) rebounded from a tough loss at Morgan State to defeat Quinnipiac in the first round of the Tyler Ugolyn Memorial Classic. Darryl Proctor led all players with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Quinnipiac (2-1, 0-0 Northeast) led by six early in the second half before the Retrievers went on an 11-2 run to assume a lead they never surrendered. The Bobcats missed a chance to tie the game in the final seconds as Bryan Geffen's 3-point attempt fell short. UMBC will face tournament host Columbia tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Maryland 89, Vermont 74 (OT)
Greivis Vasquez hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left in regulation as the Terrapins (3-0, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) escaped with an overtime victory. Vermont (1-2, 0-0 America East) was led by Marqus Blakely's 23 points and 11 rebounds, but Blakely's poor free throw shooting came back to bite the visiting Catamounts. Blakely missed six of 13 attempts from the charity stripe, including one with a chance to go up by four on the possession preceding Vasquez's game-tying effort. Vermont is idle this weekend before traveling to Delaware for a Tuesday night showdown at 7:00 p.m.
